Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One had its premiere early this week and first reactions from eminent critics have emerged on social media. As is par for the course, the early reactions are heaping praise on the movie, hailing its spectacular stunts and set pieces and dubbing it a thrill ride with excellent pacing from start to finish. More surprisingly though, it’s being hailed as a cautionary tale in light of AI seemingly being the film’s prime antagonist.

Here are a few reactions from social media echoing the aforementioned sentiments.

Drew Taylor from The Wrap, The Playlist, and The New York Times, as well as co-hosting the Light The Fuse podcasts described it as a thrill ride while showering praise on the final act.

Carla Renata of The Curvy Film Critic exclaimed that the movie exceeded her expectations, with the stunts leaving her gasping for air. Furthermore, in one of her replies, she clarified that the whole film is IMAX, which most likely indicates that Dead Reckoning Part One will play in the 1.89:1 IMAX aspect ratio when viewed in IMAX theaters.

Kristen Lopez of The Wrap enjoyed it as well, praising the film’s women Rebecca Ferguson and new entrant Hayley Atwell, labelling the movie “impeccably cast” and “beautifully shot”.

Perri Nemiroff of Collider called the movie another winner for the franchise with exhilarating set pieces, and lauded the choice of capturing as many of the stunts in-camera as possible.

Steve Weintraub of Collider similarly called the movie incredible and the fastest 2.5 hour movie yet, one that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Lastly, Scott Mantz of Screen Actors Guild and the Producers Guild of America called it “worth the wait” with action that keeps you on the “edge of your seat”. He concluded by declaring that Tom Cruise has topped himself once again, presumably after last year’s Top Gun: Maverick.

While early reactions on social media should always be taken with a grain of salt as they tend to skew overwhelming positive for many movies, fans can rest assured on this one with McQuarrie’s and Cruise’s stellar track records. Action movie buffs would no doubt be convinced that this movie should, at the very least, live up to the expectations raised by its two trailers.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One hits theaters on July 12, 2023.
