John Wick: Chapter 4 waltzed past audiences in may, delivering what was arguably the strongest entry in the franchise. With a worldwide gross nearing $430 million, the movie’s encouraging earnings established John Wick as a formidable franchise with a global appetite and a box office that has been steadily doubling with each successive entry. Fans were, however, left clamoring for more and Wick’s fate at the end of Chapter 4 prompted numerous concerns on whether this was the end of the franchise. Turns out, that may not be the case after all.
In their Q4 2023 earnings call, Joe Drake, the Motion Picture Group chairman at Lionsgate, shared an update on the status of different properties in the now burgeoning John Wick universe. Hinting at the aforementioned growing appetite of fans worldwide for more John Wick content, the executive rounded out their upcoming slate, while seemingly dropping the bomb that John Wick 5 is in early development at the studio. Here’s the exec’s full quote:
We’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite by the audience.
What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including [John Wick 5] and including television series, The Continental, will be airing soon. And so, we’re building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.
Not only does this confirm a fifth movie in the works in some form, it also sounds like we’re getting a AAA John Wick game, ostensibly set in the same universe. That’s a pretty exciting prospect in itself, seeing just how often the series evokes comparisons to video games. The fourth installment even had a top-down action sequence modeled after similar gameplay that existed in retro video games.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is now available on digital, with its Blu-Ray, 4K and DVD releases set for June 13, 2023.
