The first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI is barely out yet, but the entertainment IP and its developer Rockstar Games are already smashing records.
For the uninitiated, Rockstar Games unveiled the trailer for GTA VI earleir today. The trailer has amassed close to 80 million views within 19 hours of it being posted. Hopes among fans are high that it will best record-holder Korean band BTS and beat the 108 million views that it gained on its music video in a span of 24 hours. It’s also garnered an astonishing 8.2 million likes.

The trailer reveal itself was preceded by a few announcements, with some of them amassing records of the own. To start with, the first tweet announcing that the trailer will be revealed early in December is the second-most liked gaming tweet of 2024 with over 1.6 million likes and 185 million viewing impressions.
On similar lines, the second tweet announcing the date and time of Trailer 1’s premiere is now the most liked gaming tweet of 2024 with over 2 million likes and 187 million viewing impressions. And while it’s not among the Top 30 most liked tweets of all time, it’s probably in the Top 50 or the Top 100.
Very few gaming IPs today can command this sort of pull, save for the ones deeply embedded in pop culture such as Mario or Pokemon. And among AAA tiles, this sort of recognition is a rarity. In its press release published alongside the trailer, Take-Two revealed that Grand Theft Auto V has sold a phenomenal 190 million units thus far to become the second best-selling video game of all time. That kind of pull almost guarantees a big opening and allows Rockstar to leverage that and take some risks.
Grand Theft Auto VI is slated to arrive on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and the Xbox Series S some time in 2025.
