The Mission: Impossible series has seen Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt square off against all sorts of madmen. Some like Sean Ambrose from Rogue Nation have even been affiliated with rogue organizations such as The Syndicate. With Dead Reckoning, it appears McQuarrie is upping the challenge for Hunt as he’ll not only have Gabriel as antagonist for company, but will also be dealing with a group of covert intelligence operatives referred to as The Community.
In a detailed trailer breakdown with Empire Magazine, McQuarrie teases the role played by Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis as members of The Community who do their bidding.
They are more or less the enforcement wing of The Community. The Community are the various heads of various agencies within the intelligence community, and they are referred to collectively as The Community.
In McQuarrie’s words, The Community is a group of operatives sent to keep Hunt in line and his actions in check. While it also includes other characters played by Charles Parnell, Rob Delaney, Mark Gatiss and Indira Varma, it’s Whigham and Davis who will largely do The Community’s bidding, serving as a secondary set of obstacles to Hunt. It’s quite possibel that The Community is spearheaded by Kittridge who has deployed them to restrain Hunt and prevent him from unleashing more chaos by virtue of his reckless actions.
They are the two guys sent to keep Ethan Hunt in line when he does what he inevitably does. What’s fun about this movie is that everybody in it has seen this movie before. They all know what Ethan is going to do. They understand how he operates. They’re not at all surprised when Ethan takes matters into his own hands. And in the form of Shea and Tarzan they’ve sent people who know exactly what they’re dealing with. It’s a very fun dynamic.
In the context of the trailer, the duo are seen in front of a helicopter. McQuarrie clarifeis that it’s their delivery device and expresses excitement about their entrance.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is set to release on July 12, 2023.
