The casting for Superman: Legacy has been one of the most sought after scoops in the world of entertainment and film journalism. Countless articles, bets, rumors, and stories have been written and published in the hopes of finding and narrowing down just who exactly director James Gunn has on his mind. More recently, the casting was narrowed down to a few potential leads – three each for Clark Kent and Lois Lane. As it turns out, the roles have finally been cast.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that David Corenswet has been cast as Clark Kent / Kal-El / Superman and Rachel Brosnahan will join him as Lois Lane in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. After debunking numerous rumors about casting shortlists and other potential candidates in the running, Gunn himself confirmed the casting as accurate, while calling both leads fine actors.
Corenswet has been a fan-favorite for some time now, with fan art already depicting him in the role of DC’s oldest superhero. And fans have already begun comparing him to the DCEU’s current Man of Steel, Henry Cavill, with both actors bearing an uncanny resemblance and similar jawlines. Corenswet is certainly going to be open to some massive scrutiny seeing as he’s just landed the most significant role in the DC Universe, one that he’ll likely be playing for years to come.
Gunn had previously shared his thoughts on what he’s looking for in a Superman actor. At the time, Gunn had revealed that he wants someone with the warmth, compassion, and kindness of Superman.
It has to be somebody who has all of the humanity that Superman has, but he’s also an alien. It’s gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has. And it has to be somebody that you want to give a hug.
We’ll find out just how well of a match Corenswet is for the role once Superman: Legacy reeleases in theaters on July 11, 2025.
