As Captain America: Brave New World undergoes principal photography, details are scarce on what its storyline will entail. We’ve gotten teases in the past suggesting its tone will be grounded in reality and it looks like we’ll have to make do with teases for a while. In an interview, new Captain America Anthony Mackie teased his dynamic with Harrison Ford both on and off screen.

Speaking for their characters, Mackie revealed that both Captain America and General Ross have largely been friendly with each other, but often can’t get along in the way they see world events and policies. This is expected to continue, despite the man donning the mantle no longer being Steve Rogers. With Mackie’s Sam Wilson, there’s probably even more scope for rivalry, seeing as their last major interaction had Ross lock Wilson up in the underwater prison known as The Raft.

We spent a good bit of time together. Ross and Cap have always had that relationship, where they were friends and they respected each other, but they always bumped heads. That’s their relationship in the storyline.

Despite their bumpy on-screen dynamic, Mackie was all praise for Harrison Ford. Admitting to being a nervous wreck in his presence, Ford deployed his natural charisma to quickly make everyone feel at ease.

The first day was so intimidating. I was so f***ing nervous I couldn’t remember my lines. He’s Harrison f***ing Ford. There is this aura about him. But he dispels that really quickly because he’s such a cool guy. He’s everything a movie star should be. He would say, ‘Let’s shoot this piece of shit.’ And everybody was like, ’Yeah, let’s shoot this shit.’

For MCU stars, it certainly must have been a treat to get to work with the legendary actor of yesteryears. I’m sure Mackie’s story is not the only one and Marvel Studios marketing is going to lean heavily into the film’s cast being enamored to work with Ford once the movie inches closer towards release.

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters next year, on July 26, 2024.
